How the storage works
Choose the storage configuration on the product page and the mattress platform is built as a lift-up lid, supported on gas-lift pistons. Two storage-base options appear on typical frames: a reinforced slatted gas-lift, or a solid ottoman base (listed as a divan ottoman on some models). A non-storage base — slats or solid wood — is still available if you do not need the void.

When an ottoman is the better choice
The lift-up void is most useful where wardrobe space is tight: spare duvets, winter clothes, or the extra pillows that otherwise sit on a chair. You will need enough clearance at the end or side of the bed to raise the platform; a frame pushed hard against a wall or a low footboard radiator can make that awkward.
