Standard UK bed sizes
These are mattress sizes, which is what UK bed names usually describe. A complete Bedwick frame is larger. Use the planner for a first pass, then confirm the outer dimensions on the product page.

How to measure your room
Measure at floor level, wall to wall. Include the skirting — it is part of the usable floor. Note chimney breasts, radiators, sloped ceilings and built-in furniture that eat into the rectangle. The planner is a rectangular room model, so treat alcoves as a smaller usable width.
Then measure the routes in: doorway, landing and the turn at the top of the stairs. A bed that fits the room still has to arrive in pieces or as a whole.
How much space to leave around a bed
There is no official UK figure for walking space around a bed. As a practical guide, about 60 cm at each side feels comfortable for an adult; below 45 cm you will often turn sideways. At the foot, 70 cm or more is more comfortable than a squeeze past the bed end. These are planning recommendations, not regulations.
Mattress size versus complete bed-frame size
“King” means a 150 × 200 cm mattress. Upholstered rails, the headboard and any footboard add to the floor the bed actually occupies. Bedwick product pages list outer dimensions per size. The planner uses those figures when a specific product is selected, and the mattress footprint when they are missing — it will never claim a named Bedwick bed fits from mattress size alone.
Small-bedroom layout advice
In a compact room, drop one bedside table, slide the bed toward one wall, and keep the door swing clear. A Bedwick ottoman bed can replace a bulky blanket box. Sliding wardrobe doors need less operating space than hinged ones. If a king-size bed only fits with very restricted sides, a double will usually feel better day to day.

- What size bed fits my room?
- It depends on the usable floor, not just the named mattress size. Enter your room, keep space for walking, doors and a wardrobe, then compare UK sizes in the planner. A double needs less width than a king; a super king needs a genuinely wide room.
- How much walking space should I leave around a bed?

- What is the minimum room size for a king-size bed?
- A UK king mattress is 150 × 200 cm, and the frame is larger. As a rough planning start, many people want around 3 m of wall width so there is still walking space each side — but doors, wardrobes and bedside tables change that. Use the planner rather than a single minimum.
- Is a small double the same as a queen in the UK?
- No. In the UK the size between a single and a double is called a small double (120 × 190 cm). “Queen” is not the standard UK name for that size.
- Does bed size include the frame?
- Usually not. Standard UK sizes describe the mattress. The complete Bedwick frame is wider and longer. Always check the product dimensions for the bed you are buying.
- How much space should be left between a bed and wardrobe?
- Leave enough to walk and to use the wardrobe. Hinged doors need their swing; sliding doors still need standing room in front. The planner warns when the bed sits in that operating space.
- Can I use feet and inches?
- Yes. Switch to ft & in at any time. The planner keeps the same internal millimetre values so the room does not jump size when you change units.
- Are the calculator results exact?
- They are a scaled 2D plan of a rectangular room. They do not include every alcove, ceiling slope or manufacturing tolerance. Handcrafted frames can vary by a small amount. Confirm the product page dimensions and your access routes before ordering.
- Should I measure skirting boards?
- Yes. Measure the usable floor between finished walls, which includes the skirting. Ignoring it makes the room look larger than the bed will actually see.
- How do I account for an opening door?
- Add the door, choose the wall and whether it opens inward. The planner treats the inward swing as a no-go area, not as walking space. If the bed sits in that arc, you will see a warning.
