How does the Ottoman Bed Storage Calculator work?

The calculator multiplies the internal length, width and depth of the compartment to find a theoretical volume, then converts that into litres and cubic metres. Because real ottoman beds contain gas-lift arms, hinges and framing, a generic allowance is applied to reach an estimated usable capacity. When you add items, their packed volumes are totalled and divided by a packing-efficiency factor that reflects how much unused space irregular items leave behind.

How much storage does an ottoman bed have?

Capacity varies with the bed size, the internal depth and the internal construction. A super king ottoman bed with a deep compartment holds far more than a single ottoman bed with a shallow one. Bedwick does not publish a verified litre figure for every model, so this tool gives a clearly labelled estimate based on the standard UK mattress footprint and the depth you choose.

Ottoman bed storage capacity by UK size

The table below uses an example internal depth of 24 cm and a generic obstruction allowance of 85%. It is illustrative, not a specification.

What can you store in an ottoman bed?

Ottoman storage is ideal for bulky, lightweight items: spare duvets and pillows, seasonal bedding sets, folded clothing, towels, shoe boxes and storage boxes. Soft items vacuum-pack very efficiently. Rigid items such as suitcases and large boxes only fit when their height is within the internal depth — the calculator warns you when a selected item may be too tall.

Can you store suitcases in an ottoman bed?

Sometimes. A large suitcase can have an acceptable volume but still be too tall for the compartment. Compare the suitcase’s height with the ottoman’s internal depth before relying on it. If you store luggage regularly, a deeper ottoman bed or a side-lift design may suit you better.

Ottoman bed storage versus drawers

Ottoman beds offer one large, continuous compartment that is good for bulky items and uses the full footprint of the bed. Drawer beds keep smaller items organised and accessible without lifting the mattress, and they need no floor clearance to open. The trade-off is access frequency against bulk: an ottoman bed suits seasonal storage you reach occasionally, while drawers suit items you use often.

Side-lift versus end-lift ottoman beds

Side-lift and end-lift describe how you access the storage, not how much it holds. End-lift beds lift from the foot end and need clearance at the foot; side-lift beds lift from one side and work well when foot space is limited. Choose by your room layout — and confirm the lift option on the product page.

How to measure ottoman bed storage

Measure the internal length and width between the frame walls, and the usable depth from the base to the underside of the mattress platform. Do not use the outer frame size or the mattress footprint as the internal measurement — both overstate the real storage space.

Choosing the right ottoman bed for a small bedroom

In a small bedroom, ottoman storage replaces separate storage furniture and frees up floor space. Check the complete frame footprint and walking clearance with our Bed Size & Room Planner, then explore the Bedwick Ottoman Beds category.

Frequently asked questions

How much storage does an ottoman bed have?
It depends on the bed size, the internal depth and the construction. A larger UK size with a deeper compartment holds more, while gas-lift arms, internal framing and the mattress platform reduce the usable space. Our calculator gives a labelled estimate in litres rather than a single fixed figure.
How many litres does a double ottoman bed hold?
Using a typical internal depth of around 24 cm, a double ottoman bed provides an estimated 500–530 litres of usable storage. The exact figure varies by model, so confirm the internal measurements on the product page.
How many litres does a king size ottoman bed hold?
With a typical 24 cm internal depth, a king size ottoman bed provides an estimated 610–620 litres of usable storage. A super king ottoman bed holds more again. Treat these as planning estimates, not verified capacities.
What can you store inside an ottoman bed?
Ottoman storage suits bulky, lightweight items: spare duvets, pillows and bedding sets, seasonal clothing, towels, shoe boxes and storage boxes. Soft items vacuum-pack very well. Rigid items only fit if their height is within the internal depth.
Can you store suitcases in an ottoman bed?
Sometimes. A suitcase may have an acceptable volume but still be too tall for the compartment. Compare the suitcase’s height with the ottoman’s internal depth — our calculator warns when a selected suitcase may be too tall for the depth you have chosen.
How deep is ottoman bed storage?
There is no single standard depth. Internal depth typically falls between about 16 cm and 32 cm, but it varies by design. The calculator uses an editable example depth and clearly labels it as an estimate; check the product page for the bed you are buying.
Does an ottoman bed provide more storage than drawers?
An ottoman bed usually offers a larger, continuous compartment than drawer beds, which is good for bulky items. Drawer beds keep smaller items organised and accessible without lifting the mattress. Neither is universally better — it depends on what you store and how often you access it.
Is a side-lift or end-lift ottoman bed better?
It is about access, not capacity. End-lift beds lift from the foot end and suit beds with side clearance; side-lift beds lift from one side and work well when foot-end space is limited, for example at the end of a narrow bedroom.
Are ottoman beds suitable for small bedrooms?
They can be, because the storage sits under the mattress rather than in separate furniture. In a small bedroom, check the full frame footprint and walking space with our Bed Size & Room Planner before choosing a size.
Can heavy items be stored in an ottoman bed?
Ottoman storage is best for bulky, lightweight items. For heavy items, check the specific product specification and contact Bedwick support — the calculator does not publish weight limits because they vary by model.
Does stored weight affect the gas-lift mechanism?
Gas-lift struts are sized to the bed and mattress, so very heavy stored loads can change how easily the lid lifts. Confirm the intended load with the product specification and Bedwick support before storing dense items.
Are the calculator results exact?
No. The calculator gives an approximate planning estimate based on the size and depth you choose, with an allowance for unused space between items. Actual usable storage varies by bed design, internal structure and how items are packed.
How should I measure the inside of an ottoman bed?
Measure the internal length and width between the frame walls, and the usable depth from the base to the underside of the mattress platform. Avoid using the outer frame size or the mattress footprint as the internal measurement.
What is the difference between mattress size and internal storage size?
Standard UK bed sizes describe the mattress footprint. The internal storage compartment is smaller than the outer frame and is not defined by the mattress size alone. Always check the internal dimensions for the bed you are buying.
